Canada Graduate Scholarships: The Canada Graduate Scholarships Masters Degree provides financial assistance to exceptional students enrolled in a master’s or, in some cases, doctorate program in Canada. This funding enables these experts to focus solely on their studies in their respective professions.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) jointly administer the CGS M program. It supports up to 3,000 students annually in all disciplines (SSHRC). Under the leadership of the three agencies, the selection process and post-award administration are carried out at the institutional level. Using the Research Portal, students submit their application to the institution where they wish to hold their prize.

The purpose of the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s (CGS M) program is to aid in the development of research capabilities and the training of highly skilled individuals by supporting undergraduate and early graduate students who have demonstrated a high level of academic success.

Degree Level:

Eligible graduate programs must involve a strong research component that leads to the completion of a merit/expert-reviewed thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, or exhibit as a condition for program completion.

Joint programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., JD/MA, JD/Ph.D., MBA/Ph.D., MA/MBA) and clinically oriented programs of study, including clinical psychology, are suitable if they feature a substantial autonomous research component, as indicated above.

Master’s degrees focused solely on coursework are often ineligible, as indicated above because they lack a substantial research component.

Given the special criteria of some fields of study, schools are encouraged to contact the appropriate agency for clarification on the acceptability of academic programs.

Eligible Nationalities:

As of the application deadline, be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada).
Eligibility Requirements:
To qualify for the application, you must

• having completed, as of December 31 of the application year, between 0 and 12 months of full-time study (or the full-time equivalent) in the program for which you are requesting financing, which may be one of the following:
• a master’s program
• A doctoral program to which you are admitted immediately from a bachelor’s program, without having completed any graduate coursework (direct entry)
• a master’s-to-doctoral degree program
• A master’s program that will move to an appropriate doctorate program before or after award activation, with no master’s degree awarded (fast-track)
• a master’s program for which the degree requirements will be completed prior to the end of the award, allowing the award to continue into an eligible doctoral program; or between 4 and 12 months of full-time study (or full-time equivalent) in an eligible master’s program for which the degree requirements will be completed prior to activation of the award, allowing it to be activated during the first 12 months of the subsequent doctoral program for which you are requesting funding.
• not have held or be presently holding a CGS M scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC have obtained a first-class average** in each of the last two years of study, as decided by the host institution (full-time equivalent)
• Note: Institutions may, at their discretion, accept CGS M applications from applicants who have not earned a first-class grade point average; contact your preferred host institutions to assess their application of this eligibility condition.
• Submit no more than one (master’s or doctoral) scholarship or fellowship application every academic year to CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
